And a lot of promoters were afraid, especially in the U. So it's a big success. People do a lot of metal cruises around the world — there are some metal cruises in Germany, there are several in America and some in Sweden — but everybody who goes to a lot of them say it's nothing like going on the SABATON cruise because the atmosphere is the best.

There are two thousand SABATON fans on one cruise ship and the atmosphere when we play is we have the most diehard fans from around the world. The atmosphere when we go on stage is unbeatable. People say that there is nothing like that. Our fans are very loyal and when you see them all connected, some of them, as a unit in one place, that's amazing. So that is special. We had gone so far in those 13 years and some people were just not as excited about continuing as Joakim and I were.

We ended up splitting with the other members, and some of them went on to form a band called Civil War so that they could keep doing the same thing, but on a smaller level. Tommy Johannson is probably the most well-rounded musician in the band. He sings better than I do. It started in early February, when the group launched a YouTube channel called Sabaton History , which features minute educational video documentaries of various battles and moments in military history, and how the group connect these historical events with their songs.

But now, with the YouTube channel, we actually can teach about these topics. I went right up to them and it turned out they were Norwegian. Sick of their hometown of Falun being overlooked during festival season, they hosted the inaugural event then titled — Rockstad: Falun in a disused local military facility back in Moving outside the next year, then evolving into the current four-day extravaganza in Lugnet over the decade since, Sabaton Open Air is now one of the biggest and best true-metal outings in the world.

Obviously, it all takes place on a battleship…. Sabaton are, quite simply, one of a kind. That unapologetic individualism — that combination of singular focus and gunpowder spark — more than anything else, is their greatest victory. You should really follow us on Facebook.
